USD 445’s Indian Education is funded by two federal grants: Office of Indian Education for $98,503 and Cherokee Nation Co-Partner Johnson O’Malley Program for $8,050. Coffeyville’s Indian Education Project involves two Indian Education Parent Committees that support and assist in developing programs to encourage our Native American students to excel academically, culturally, and creatively. Students are given opportunities to attend cultural and college field trips throughout the school year. Title VII Indian Education Parent Committee Members are: Sheri Conn, President; Melinda Coffey, Vice-President; Patty Smith, Secretary; Karen Bobbe and Jennifer Davis, Members; Jessica Engle, Teacher Representative; Jessica Grundy, Student Member Representative. JOM Indian Education Committee Members are: Melinda Coffey, President; Sheri Conn, Vice-President; Patty Smith, Secretary; Karen Bobbe and Jennifer Davis, Members. Our district Indian Education Project serves over 430 students or about 22% of our district population.
Coffeyville’s Indian Education Project has two Native American Clubs involved in our district. Field Kindley Memorial High School Native American Club has been active for 20 years and Roosevelt Middle School Native American Club is in its third year. Indian Education also has an After School Program for Native American students kindergarten through sixth grade at Community Elementary School. These students are learning Cherokee culture, language and history in fun and exciting ways.
